I am writing this note on one of these unseasonably warm 70° days in February and am hopeful that spring is not too far off. Hopefully, by the time you are reading this, these 70° days are the norm. While I always welcome the warmer temps, what I do not welcome at this time of year is spring allergies. Originally from New England, I never had allergies until moving here. Years ago, when I had shared that I had a cold and runny nose that would not go away with a good friend and neighbor, she told me that I most likely had allergies, despite me explaining I had never had allergies my entire life. "Welcome to North Carolina," she told me. Ugh!

Growing up in a suburb of Chicago, our front cover physi-cian, Tuwanda Williamson, MD, a family medicine physi-cian with Oak Street Health in East Charlotte, knew from an early age that she would be in medicine aſter spending a lot of time in the hospital with her younger sister who suffered from Sickle Cell Disease.

She was drawn to the unique model and mission of Oak Street Health and moved to Charlotte when their first clinic opened both to be a part of their team, and to be closer to her parents who were already living here. She describes her clinic as a place where patients can feel at home and comfortable and she is motivated by seeing her patients improve their lives, whether it means lowering their A1C, losing weight, lowering their BP, exercising more, or just feeling better.

This month's specialist is from a small country town in Ireland. Dermot Phelan, MD, Ph.D., FASE, FACC, is the Medical Director of Cardiovascular Imaging, the Director of the Sports Cardiology Center, and the Co-Director of the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center for Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute. He chose his specialty because he loved studying the physiology of the cardiovascular system and he thrived on the intensity of managing acutely sick patients in the coronary care unit.

He never really has a "typical" day. Some days he sees patients in the out-patient department and other days he is rounding the hospital reading echocardiograms or doing procedures, and others he is doing administrative work or research. The variety of his days is one of the many things he loves about his job. He believes that quality care is experiential and that it places the patient at the center of all decisions.

Our featured nurse, Jeanette "Jenny" Hammontree, RN, CEN, works in the Emergency Department at Novant Health Mint Hill Medical Center and found nursing because she wanted to help those that were suffering and to gain control over her own fears aſter being a flight attendant based in NY at the time of the 9/11 attacks.

When she is working in the ED, she is responsible for many things like Triage, patient assessments, medication adminis-tration, blood draws, coordinating patient transfers, and completing EMTALA forms. When working as a sexual assault nurse examiner, she has all the aforementioned duties plus gathering event history, pro-viding trauma-informed care, completing medical forensic exams, documenting and photographing injuries/abnormal physical findings, and collecting forensic evidence and testifying in court if needed.
