Press Release Comprehensive renovations to the Royal Delft Museum started

From a 'mere museum' to a 'Delft Blue Experience'

Delft, December 6, 2011 - Royal Delft, the only remaining factory in Delft that hand-produces the famous Delft Blue earthenware, has started on a comprehensive renovation of its museum. To present its history in a contemporary style the museum is working on a 'Delft Blue Experience': a journey through the present, the past and the future of this age-old earthenware.

The purpose of the renovations is to allow visitors to experience the authentic Royal Delft Blue production process more intensively. Every year Royal Delft welcomes around 120,000 visitors from
all over the world. The renovations should increase the number of visitors from the Netherlands as well as other countries. The Delft Blue Experience will open around the middle of 2012.
Henk Schouten, CEO Royal Delft: "We think it is important to preserve the tradition of handmade Delft Blue. We like to keep up with the times and with the new Experience we are making a visit to us more attractive and intense."

Royal Delft Experience

The Royal Delft Experience takes visitors back in time. The journey starts in the 17th century with the history and development of Delft Blue. In addition to the Delft Blue earthenware, Delft is also the 'City of Orange', with William of Orange and the New Church, and of Johannes Vermeer. These Delft icons will be honoured in new themed rooms in a Royal Delft Blue environment. Among other things visitors will be able to see the collection of Delft Blue that was made especially for the Dutch Royal Family, and an authentic dining room as used by Vermeer. The existing museum collection will also be on display, and of course the historic courtyard, the unique collection of building ceramics, a demonstration of the master painters and a visit to the factory will not be missing from the new Royal Delft Blue Experience.

The museum stays open

The museum will remain open to the public during the renovations. The route through the museum will temporarily be changed so that visitors experience the least possible inconvenience from the work. The museum is open Monday - Saturday from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. with the exception of public holidays.
