One of the heroes of the ill-fated 1970 Apollo 13 manned lunar-landing mission, he shares the details of the crisis that occurred following the in-flight explosion later dramatized in the Academy Award-winning film. Originally slated as the mission's Command Module Pilot, Mattingly was pulled from the Apollo 13 flight at the last minute for medical reasons but lead the ground crew's successful efforts to save his fellow astronauts. After retiring from government service in 1989, Mattingly focused on the commercialization of space with the highly successful Atlas program that delivered commercial launch services and systems to the private sector. As President of the Rocket Development Company, he led the development of low cost commercial launch systems that maintained constellations of satellites and helped revolutionize global communications.
