THE "KONČAR" ANNUAL AWARD FOR THE DOCTORAL THESIS AWARDED TO MARIO JURKOVIĆ, PHD

It is an honour to commend another great success for our company, which is primarily a success of our colleague but it also significantly contributes to the wider transformer community and industry.
We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our colleague Mario Jurković, PhD, on his doctoral thesis, defended in the academic year 2020/2021, and on his outstanding scientific achievements in the field of industry-applied technical sciences. The award is sponsored by the company Končar - Elektroindustrija d.d. and it was awarded to our colleague Jurković as part of the celebration of the Faculty Day of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, University of Zagreb. The award was presented by Ivan Bahun, PhD, Deputy Chairman of the Management Board of the company Končar - Elektroindustrija d.d.
The title of the thesis is "Calculation of transformer short-circuit voltage using conformal mappings" (in Croatian: Izračun napona kratkoga spoja transformatora primjenom konformnih preslikavanja).
The mentor of this doctoral thesis was Professor Damir Žarko, PhD, who has recently, in co-authorship with Branimir Ćućić, PhD, published the first book about transformers in Croatian since the book written by Anton Dolenc in 1961.

During his many years of work as a special transformer design engineer , our colleague Jurković realised that the special in-house computer programs based on analytical solutions provide satisfactory solutions for common transformer geometries, but for more complicated geometries the design engineer has to use the experience and comparison with measurements of similar transformers. The solution to the problem could be in the use of computer programs based on the finite element method (FEM), but the primary goal was to come up with a method that would be easy to use and easy to implement into existing computer programs.

In accordance with the aforementioned, the method presented in the doctoral thesis is an adequate alternative to the finite element method (FEM).

In addition to being a commendable example of great personal commitment and investment into one's work, this is a great example of how successful, applicable and improved industrial solutions can emerge from the synergy of the scientific community and practical experience gained through the economy.
