On a per-share basis, the Pittsburgh-based company said it had net income of 59 cents. Earnings, adjusted for pretax gains, were 57 cents per share.

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 52 cents per share.

The maker of engineered products for the aerospace and other industries posted revenue of $1.82 billion in the period, also topping Street forecasts. Five analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $1.74 billion.

For the current quarter ending in June, Howmet expects its per-share earnings to range from 57 cents to 59 cents.

The company said it expects revenue in the range of $1.83 billion to $1.85 billion for the fiscal second quarter.

Howmet expects full-year earnings in the range of $2.31 to $2.39 per share, with revenue ranging from $7.23 billion to $7.38 billion.
