Good start to the year

Engey docked in Reykjavík at midday last Tuesday after the the first trip of the year. According to skipper Friðleifur Einarsson, the year has got off to a fine start with between 120 and 130 tonnes in the fishroom, caught off the Westfjords.

'We started the trip in the Víkuráll Gully, hoping to find some redfish. But there wasn't much to be seen, although there was cod there. We shifted to the Hali grounds and finally to the Thveráll Gully, and in both places we had some mixed haddock and saithe with the cod,' he said, commenting that the trip began on the 3rd of January, with reasonable weather apart from a twelve-hour break due to heavy weather.

'We had one trip between Christmas and New Year, with around the same amount of fish, but there was hardly any cod to be had,' he said.

Production started at HB Grandi's Norðurgarður factory on the 2nd of January, and as well as Engey, Sturlaugur H Böðvarsson was also in port today. The company's other two wetfish trawlers are at sea, with, Helga María off the Westfjords and Ottó N Thorláksson off the south-west. Sturlaugur H Böðvarsson sailed last night and Engey is expected to be back at sea tonight.
