Charlotte, N.C., Jan. 26, 2018 - In June 2017, Tiffany Johnson was snorkeling in the Bahamas when a shark attack forced her to fight for her life. Bolstered by thoughts of her three children and husband JJ, Johnson miraculously survived the attack, which resulted in the loss of her right arm. Now, a cutting edge surgical procedure called targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR), is giving Johnson hope. TMR allows Johnson's muscles and nerves in her residual limb to communicate with a microprocessor-controlled prosthetic hand fit by Hanger Clinic's Mike Jenks, CPO, making controlling the hand a more intuitive process. Johnson is already making great strides as she learns how to use the hand, which will ultimately allow her to complete day-to-day activities, from eating to playing with her children, with more ease.
