General Dynamics reported higher sales for the second quarter, with growth powered by the company's marine and combat-systems segments.

The aerospace and defense company had a profit of $744 million, or $2.70 a share, down from $766 million, or $2.75 a share, in the same quarter a year ago. Analysts polled by FactSet expected earnings of $2.56 a share.

Sales rose 10.5% to $10.15 billion. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected sales of $9.45 billion.

Sales growth was powered by the marine and combat segments.

Operating costs rose 12% to $9.19 billion.

Chief Executive Phebe Novakovic said the company continued to grapple with supply-chain challenges. The company's backlog rose 4.3% to the end quarter at $91.4 billion.
