Gazprom Neft-Rosneft joint venture Messoyakhaneftegaz has opened an integrated field development centre in Tyumen. Remote-control operations-management technologies are expected to increase scope for greater efficiency in developing hard-to-recover reserves at the Messoyakha group of fields.

The Digital Centre will coordinate all stages of the production cycle at the Vostochno-Messoyakhskoye field - Russia's northernmost onshore field, located on the Gydan Peninsula. Company specialists have developed a cutting-edge complex, capable of generating highly accurate predictions and development scenarios for this Arctic asset, in line with technological parameters, infrastructure capacity and the unique geological features of Messoyakha strata.

Computer models of wells, pipelines, and oil and gas treatment facilities together form a complete 'digital twin' of this Arctic oilfield, located almost 2,000 kilometres from its virtual duplicate. Digital twins of the Messoyakha field's 550 production- and injection-well stock, computer models of its 500-kilometre pipeline system, and simulations of hydrocarbon inflows are synchronised with real-world production processes, and can replicate the entire production cycle - from strata to oil inflow - with 97% accuracy.

Using mathematical modelling and machine learning algorithms, specialists coordinate the entire operational cycle at this standalone field, increasing viability in construction, drilling, production, and processing hydrocarbons in this remote standalone Arctic region.

'Developing a portfolio of digital solutions, and transforming key business processes, is allowing the company to develop technical and intellectual potential quickly, and to the fullest possible extent. Integrated field development centres and smart production control systems are already in operation at almost 10 of the company's assets. Our partners are also involved in this change-management process: we are giving our colleagues access to shared digital services, developing new business models and software products together, within an integrated and cohesive ecosystem. Radically new technological solutions, and deploying non-standard approaches in developing hard-to-recover oil, are giving the company the opportunity to become a benchmark in creating field simulations ('digital fields') and new oil-production control models. We believe that this full-scale transformation of our operational processes could deliver a direct economic benefit of ₽100 million.'
Vadim YakovlevDeputy CEO for Exploration and Production, Gazprom Neft

The integrated Messoyakhaneftegaz centre is the result of the comprehensive and integrated digital transformation of Gazprom Neft's Upstream Directorate - the company's major changes here involving the reworking of key business processes and the creation of 'digital clusters' of 'smart fields', heavily reliant on Industry 4.0 technologies and flexible, multidisciplinary teams.

'Our work these days involves not just large volumes of oil, but also large volumes of data. The capacity at this integrated centre means we can get comprehensive, integrated analytics quickly, in real time, without wasting valuable human resources on those insights and generating timely, accurate forecasts over any period of time. This means the cross-functional Messoyakha team can focus on what's most important - safe and efficient operations in developing hard-to-recover Arctic reserves, and developing our strategic potential in the rational use of subsoil resources.'

Notes for editors

The Messoyakha group of fields includes the Vostochno (Eastern) and Zapadno (Western) Messoyakhskoye blocks located in the Gydan Peninsula, in the Tazovsky district of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The field is considered unique in terms of its proved reserves. The project is being implemented with very limited access to industrial and transportation infrastructure. Licenses to both blocks are owned by Messoyakhaneftegaz, jointly controlled by Rosneft and Gazprom Neft - the operator on the project. President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, gave the instruction to commence commercial production at the field via video link on 21 September 2016. Total cumulative production at the Vostochno-Messoyakhskoye stands at more than 21 million tonnes.
