Ford announced on Wednesday that vehicle sales were up by around 1% in the second quarter in the United States, mainly thanks to the success of the Mustang Mach-E, sales of which jumped by more than 46% over the period.

The American automaker says it sold 536.050 units in the period from April to June, compared with 531,662 in the same period last year.

While the carmaker's performance is usually boosted by its pick-ups, sales of its larger models rose by just 4.5% in the second quarter.

By contrast, sales of the electric Mustang Mach-E almost doubled to 12,645 units in the quarter, compared with 8,633 a year earlier.

Overall, sales of electric vehicles jumped by 61.4% to 23,957 in the second quarter.957 in the second quarter and hybrids by 55.6%, Ford said in a press release, while sales of internal combustion engine cars fell by 5%.

Listed on the New York Stock Exchange, Ford shares were down 0.1% on Wednesday morning following the publication of these figures.
