Entropic, MobileTREC Collaborate on Reverse Mass Notification Alert Solution Leveraging the Consumer Set-top Box Platform

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 9, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Consumer Electronics Show -- Entropic (Nasdaq:ENTR), a world leader in semiconductor solutions for the connected home, and MobileTREC Corporation, the world's leading innovator in mobile personal safety technology, today announced their collaboration to develop a next generation Machine-to-Machine (M2M)-based reverse mass notification alert solution for public safety agencies that leverages the cable set-top box (STB) platform.

Traditional reverse mass notification systems are designed to quickly alert communities of potential dangers and disasters. These systems target homes and businesses in affected areas using pre-recorded emergency response messages sent to consumers' landlines or television sets via a mass broadcast by the local TV station.

To advance the reverse mass notification alert system, MobileTREC created Mobile R911TM, a mobile reverse 911 application, that can geo-target, identify and send mass alerts to any citizen/subscriber in relevant proximity to an emergency/disaster incident. Taking its Mobile R911 application one step further, MobileTREC collaborated with Entropic to develop a M2M Mass AlertTM solution that could deliver the same mass notification to cable STBs, based on geo-targeting service-able cable addresses using an Entropic-powered STB platform.

"It is of particular interest to public safety agencies, including San Diego, California, county officials, who are integrating our Mobile R911 technology, to be able to quickly and effectively communicate with their constituents in any potential disaster situation," said Henry Siegel, vice president of Emerging Markets at MobileTREC. "As landlines are disappearing at a rapid pace and many citizens do not watch their local TV broadcast, safety and emergency response personnel need to ensure multiple methods to reach citizens. Our cooperation with Entropic shows the power of their technology and our ability to develop next-generation M2M Mass Alert solutions as a natural extension of our proven Mobile R911 system."

M2M Mass Alerts leverages Entropic's latest generation of high-performance STB system-on-a-chip (SoC) solutions, the TSC17x STB SoC family. The platform offers the first dual-core ARM® Cortex-A9 processor with integrated NEON™ technology for multimedia extension and provides support for multiple open standards, including the latest Google Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich" operating system.

"Using our cable set-top box system-on-chip platform as a means to alert citizens in a specific community is a powerful proposition for ensuring another method to contact potentially affected individuals in a disaster," said Dr. Anton Monk, co-founder and vice president of Technology at Entropic. "By using our open standard silicon and software solution, we are empowering public safety agencies with a new set of tools to reach the millions of users of "connected devices," including cable set-top boxes."
