AWS Summit Sydney 2017: Solving the problem of data

A capacity crowd gathered in Sydney to hear about where AWS is heading over the next 12 months

90% of data is less than two years old.
90% of data is unstructured or semi-structured data.

Data comes in all forms - video, audio, images, documents, social media feeds, purchase histories, call centre transcripts, geospatial imagery and more. It is XML, YAML, JSON, PDF, ARFF. And with all this data coming in… 1 in 3 business leaders don't trust it anyway.

At AWS Summit Sydney last week, Sam Mason (Head of Data Science) and Giles Bill (CIO) from Bulletproof presented alongside Alena Moison from the Department of Environment, Land, Water & Planning (DELWP). Sam, Giles & Alena discussed using a Data Lake built on AWS to address DELWP's data challenges.

DELWP were accumulating data and faced a challenge in storing, managing and searching 0.5 petabytes of aerial and satellite imagery and point cloud data. Their requirements were only increasing, with data growth of 3000% over the last 10 years. Working with DELWP, we built a data lake solution to address these requirements, while also encouraging experimentation, reducing risk and reducing Time-to-Insight as well.

That was just one part of AWS Summit Sydney, where a capacity crowd gathered to find out the latest innovations and developments in the cloud. In addition to our presentation, we spoke to a wide range of people - all curious about taking their next best step in their digital transformation journey.

This ranged from people taking that first step and migrating to cloud, through to people looking to push the envelope, inspired by data lakes or looking to release applications and features early and at low-risk using an Agile and DevOps approach.
