Broadcast International announced today that it will launch the industry's first WebM? video encoding headend that is exclusively software-based and built to process live video events. CodecSys?, the company's flagship software-based encoding and transcoding solution, dynamically embeds a suite of VP8 codecs into its framework that instantly changes the file format of the video stream it is processing.

WebM?, the new file format built on VP8 and sponsored by Google, is gaining rapid acceptance across the industry for its efficient delivery of video over the web. By combining the efficiencies of WebM with the power of live encoding from CodecSys?, Broadcast International can provide high quality, HD broadcasts traditionally only available from broadcast-quality networks for the enjoyment of a much greater audience of users from every part of the web.

Users of CodecSys? have seen the power of swapping multiple-codecs in and out of a real-time encoding session to ensure optimal gains in both quality and bandwidth reduction. CodecSys processes video by constantly changing a series of codecs based upon the intricate features inside a video stream and then delivers a standards-based video file to downstream services including VoD servers, streaming servers, DRM modules etc.

CodecSys becomes a WebM video headend with the click of a mouse

Now, with this new version, the same CodecSys software platform can swap out its libraries of H.264 codecs and load a suite of VP8 codecs to instantly encode or transcode all video assets under the WebM format. All other steps in the encoding workflow are maintained or adjusted pending the file format change. However, the solution requires no change to the underlying hardware server and supports both live and file-based applications.

Unlike traditional hardware-based encoders, CodecSys is a true software platform that runs on open, Intel? based servers. It is a modular framework with objected-oriented services that users can dynamically re-configure or deploy. At the point of actual encoding, just like other encoders, CodecSys deploys a dedicated codec based on file format. However, because it is just another modular service, when the file format changes, the system just deploys a new suite of codecs. There are no chips to design, no processors to embed, and no additional products to license. The solution requires no firmware upgrades, no patches to the system, and certainly no new appliances -- CodecSys becomes multiple products in a single version.

?This release is in response to direct feedback and customer adoption of the WebM format and our first-hand interaction with the increase of WebM content flowing over our customers' networks. The fast time-to-market demonstrates that our customers have a future-proof encoding strategy with CodecSys. We can add any format support our customers need with the click of a mouse,? said Steve Jones, General Manager of the company's CodecSys Division.

The CodecSys WebM headend module will launch in Q2, 2011. Broadcast International will also display the module at NAB.
