BEWI, a leading provider of packaging, components, and insulation solutions, announces the opening of its new production line for expanded polystyrene (EPS) at the company's raw material facility in Etten-Leur in the Netherlands. The new production line, including a state-of-the-art extruder, significantly strengthens BEWI's capacity for use of recycled materials, and thereby also the company's commitment to a circular economy.

"We are excited to now have the new extruder in operation in Etten-Leur, enabling us to significantly increase the use of recycled material in our production of grey or white EPS raw materials. Through BEWI's Circular division, we collect used EPS from all over Europe, securing the feedstock we need and making it possible for us to close the loop for full circularity," says Alan Moss, EVP and head of BEWI RAW.

BEWI's new production line has an annual capacity of up to 25,000 tonnes of EPS, and the company intends to double the capacity by 2030. The new line can produce both grey and white EPS, using either virgin or recycled feedstock - or a combination.

"Customers are increasingly demanding a bundle of different raw materials, including both grey and white EPS, from recycled or virgin feedstock. Now, we are equipped to expand our offering," Moss continues.

Grey EPS has approximately 20 per cent better insulation value than white EPS, meaning that a certain insulation value can be achieved by thinner boards.

Increasing resource efficiency and circularity for EPS

BEWI's new production line, is handling a material essential in a variety of applications. EPS's role in modern industry is expansive, offering critical solutions for safe packaging, energy-efficient building insulation, and even in the production of durable goods such as car parts and bicycle helmets.

"In BEWI, we continuously work to improve resource efficiency, meaning that we work to reduce the use of virgin material through innovation, as well as by reusing and recycling more. Through a range of initiatives, we lower the CO2 footprint for our customers and the society," Moss continues.

Looking ahead, BEWI plans to expand the facility's processing capabilities and launch additional initiatives, further cementing its role as a leader in sustainable development.
