First Local Television Station Sportscaster to Receive
Award in Two Decades
PHOENIX - Tim Ring of KTVK-3TV in Phoenix, AZ [a Belo
station] was named the 2011 Arizona Sportscaster of the
Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters
Association [NSSA]. It's the first time in more than
two decades a Phoenix-based television station sportscaster
has received the honor. It's the first win for Ring
whose name will be added to a roster of legendary Arizona
broadcasters including Phoenix Suns play-by-play announcer
Al McCoy.
"This is a tremendous honor and I appreciate this
distinction from the NSSA," said Ring, who joined 3TV as
the station's Sports Director in May, 2009. "I
take great pride in bringing sports news to our viewers
every night and recognize the support of 3TV in believing
in the value of local sports."
Ring was nominated and voted on by his peers in the field
of sports reporting. He will receive his honor at the
53rd Annual NSSA Awards Banquet on June 11, 2012 in
Salisbury, NC.
This year, Ring is among some very distinguished
company. Sharing the stage with him is California
winner, Los Angeles Dodgers play-by-play announcer, Vin
Scully. Being inducted into the NSSA Hall of Fame is
Bob Costas of NBC Sports and the Major League Baseball
Network.
"Tim is passionate about sports and it shows on the
air. It's really no surprise to us that he has been
recognized as the top sportscaster of the year for
Arizona," said Executive News Director Brad
Remington. "He has done a terrific job the past two
years leading our sports department."
Ring was brought to 3TV in 2009 to enhance the station's
sports presence in the market. It didn't take long before
Ring's work in Phoenix was recognized on a national
level. In 2011, ESPN covered Ring's exclusive story
with Kerry Taylor, the former Arizona State University
[ASU] wide receiver who voiced dissatisfaction with his
then head coach Dennis Erickson.
Ring's sports resume is impressive. He served as the
main sports anchor at Fox Sports Net in Denver and hosted
pre and postgame shows for the Nuggets, Rockies and
Avalanche as well as a sideline reporter for Denver Broncos
pre-season football. He also handled play-by-play as
the voice of the University of Colorado and University of
Denver men's and women's basketball teams and
Colorado Rockies spring training baseball.
Prior to joining FSN in Denver, Ring spent three years at
WAMI-TV in Miami and served as sports director at WLUK-TV
in Green Bay where he covered two Packer trips to the Super
Bowl and hosted the critically acclaimed Brett Favre
Show.
A native of Chicago, Ring is a 1991 graduate of DePaul
University. He and his wife, Fay, have identical twin sons,
Connor and Dylan and a new baby girl, Dodger Bardot, born
this past December.
