Beijing, China, 10 January 2012 - Global visualization technology company Barco is pleased to announce that it has won the Lean Practice Award 2011. The award, conferred by 1MFG.COM, recognizes Barco as an example of a company that has very quickly implemented lean operations in their factory. Companies with lower production volumes rarely embark on a Lean adventure - Barco is a notable exception.

Shanghai 1MFG.COM Business Service Co., Ltd. (1MFG.COM) introduced the Lean Practice Award for China's manufacturing excellence. The jury for the award includes more than 30 general managers, directors and industry experts with 20 years of experience in lean production. The 1MFG.COM platform also opens networking opportunities with similar companies - like Toyota, Danfoss, Lenovo, Delphi and others - to generate ideas for continuously improving operations.

Go Gemba

In manufacturing, Gemba refers to the factory floor - and managers 'go gemba' to look for practical improvements to their operations. In March 2011, Barco initiated a 'Go Gemba' program with striking results. The company asked 1MFG.COM for an independent evaluation. After assessment, 1MFG.COM confirmed that Barco is on the right track with Go Gemba, and that both customers and visitors from other Barco sites appreciate the company's efforts. Barco will continue its customer-focused course, improving operational efficiency and reducing energy consumption as it implements the concept of operational excellence.

Barco's Beijing factory was founded in 2003, and has already qualified for ISO 9001 (quality management system) and ISO 14001 (environmental management system) certification.

John Paulissen, Barco's Beijing plant director, attended the award ceremony and commented: "I'm very happy that Barco has won the Lean Practice Award 2011. The contributions of the people in Operations have made winning this award possible. With more than 500 ideas generated in 7 months - and 85% of them already implemented - we're doing things differently than we did a year ago, and we're all proud of this achievement. But Lean Operations does not stand on its own: other processes like Lean Supply Chain, Lean Innovation, and On-demand Forecasting are all part of a Lean Company, in which we do more with less and create front-runner agility. We will extend the program in 2012."
