Shares of energy companies rose as optimism about more production cuts from Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries members offset fears about demand.

Lockdowns in some of the major global cities, including London, have sparked fears of another dip in oil consumption.

Natural gas prices erased earlier declines to end 1.7% higher at a nearly three-week-high of $2.75-British-thermal units as the latest weather forecasts suggested more cool weather was on its way to parts of the U.S.
