Windstream, a privately held communications and software company, today announced it received a “B,” or Management band, score from the CDP. CDP, formerly known as the Carbon Disclosure Project, is a non-profit organization operating a global environmental disclosure system for investors, companies, cities, states and regions to manage their risks and opportunities on climate change, water security and deforestation.

The score was based on 2019, the most recent reporting period.

“Windstream shares CDP’s aim to make environmental reporting and risk management a business norm, and drive disclosure, insight and action toward a sustainable economy,” said Mark Reed, chief procurement officer at Windstream. “Our corporate sustainability program combines common sense strategies with ambitious long-term initiatives to become more resource-efficient. This approach allows us to make improvements while balancing the needs of our customers, employees and other stakeholders.”

Windstream has shown strong momentum over the past three years, moving up one band each reporting cycle, progressing from the “D,” or Disclosure, band in 2017, to the “C,” or Awareness, band in 2018, to a “B,” or Management, band in this latest submission cycle.

Windstream’s “B” score compares favorably to the global and telecommunication sector averages of “C” and the North American company average of “D.”

Windstream is making a sustained commitment to improving environmental stewardship, as evident by the continued overall decline in its annual direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions, which were down 3.2 percent in 2019, and its ability to comprehensively report value chain emissions for the first time. Value chain emissions are generated by suppliers, transportation partners and the company’s own travel.

This past reporting cycle also marked the first time Windstream had a third party verify its calculations and submission and conduct a comprehensive climate risk and opportunity assessment.
