FALFURRIAS - Winter is a great time to control feral hogs, said Dr. Maureen Frank, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service wildlife specialist based in Uvalde.

Frank will be one of the presenters at the AgriLife Extension Feral Hog Program Jan. 26 at 'David's Barn,' located at 24 Farm-to-Market Road 2191 near the Airport Road Addition Colonia in Falfurrias.

Program registration will begin at 8 a.m, with the program to start at 8:30 and conclude at 3 p.m.

Frank said the program will address feral hog biology, impacts on the environment, safety precautions when handling hogs and control techniques.

'There will be signage to indicate the exact location where the program will take place,' she said.

Frank said attendees can expect to learn about the damage feral hogs can cause to native ecosystems and how to trap them safely, legally and effectively.

'Whether attendees have experienced hog damage in the past or just want to be proactive for the future, they will benefit through gaining a better understanding of the best practices to manage this invasive species,' she said.

Additional program speakers will be James Rogers and Hector Guerra of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Austin Pierce of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and Dr. Chelsea Pike of the Texas Animal Health Commission.

The cost is $20 in advance or $25 onsite. RSVP by Jan. 23 at the AgriLife Extension office in Brooks County, 219 S. Calixto Mora Ave., or call 361-325-4402.
