Consumer confidence index realized as 66.9

The consumer confidence index calculated from the results of the consumer tendency survey carried out in cooperation with the Turkish Statistical Institute and Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey increased by 5.6% compared to the previous month. The index became 66.9 in January 2017 while it was 63.4 in December 2016.

Financial situation expectation index realized 87.9

The financial situation expectation of household index increased by 2.9% compared to the previous month and became 87.9 in January 2017. This increase shows an upswing in the financial situation expectation of households in the next 12 months period.

General economic situation expectation index became 88.6

The general economic situation expectation index which was 86 in December 2016 increased by 3% and became 88.6 in January 2017. This increase shows that number of consumers expecting a better general economic situation in the next 12 months increased compared to the previous month.

Number of people unemployed expectation index became 68.9

The number of people unemployed expectation index increased by 5.4% compared to the previous month and became 68.9 in January 2017. This increase stemmed from the increase in the ratio of people expecting a decrease in the number of unemployed persons in the next 12 months.

Probability of saving index realized as 22.4

The probability of saving index increased by 34% from 16.7 in December 2016 to 22.4 in January 2017. This increase shows that the possibility of saving of consumers in the next 12 months period increased compared to the previous month.

EXPLANATIONS

In monthly consumer tendency survey, consumers' assessments on current situation and their expectations for personal financial standing and general economic situation have been evaluated, their expenditure and saving tendencies for near future have been measured.

The consumer confidence index calculated from the survey results is evaluated within the range of 0-200. It indicates an optimistic outlook when the index is above 100, but it indicates a pessimistic outlook when it is below 100.

Backcasting method using Reg-ARIMA model was applied in order to produce the backcasted index serial of the consumer confidence index for the period 2004-2011 and published in 2013. In 2017, four sub-indices that constitute the consumer confidence index are backcasted for the period 2004-2011, with the multivariate model-based approach.
