Press release: 11.700-011/18

Vienna,2018-01-17 - The average annual inflation rate of consumer prices (CPI 2015) amounted to 2.1% in 2017, according to Statistics Austria. It lies noticeably over the level of 2016 and 2015 (+0.9% each). This increase was mainly due to significantly higher prices for fuels and heating oil in 2017, in contrast to the remarkable downward price trend for fuels and heating oil in 2016. Expenditures for transport, housing, water, energy as well as restaurants and hotels proved to be the most important price drivers. During the course of 2017, inflation ranged between 1.9% and 2.4%, falling from 2.0% in January to 1.9% in March, May and June, reaching 2.4% in September and 2.2% in December.

The average annual harmonised inflation rate of consumer prices (HICP 2015) in 2017 amounted to 2.2%, which is significantly higher than in 2016 (+1.0%).
