Sinn Féin agriculture spokesperson Declan McAleer has welcomed progress on exports of pork to Australia.

The West Tyrone MLA was speaking after Department of Agriculture Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) and the Australian Government's Department of Agriculture and Water Resources (DAWR) agreed a new veterinary health certificate for the export of pork from the North of Ireland to Australia.

Declan McAleer said:

'This announcement is a welcome boost and a clear sign of the global confidence in our local agri-food industry, which is world standard.

'This is the culmination of years of hard work by our producers, the Foods Standard Agency and DAERA. It comes just weeks after it was announced that trade has started between the north and China.

'The opening of exports to Australia will create and protect jobs, and inject optimism into the industry, which is facing many challenges, the greatest of which is Brexit.'
