The Borough of Springdale will receive a $5,499,200 low-interest loan from the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST), according to Senator Randy Vulakovich.
PENNVEST awarded the funding at its board meeting today (January 31). PENNVEST financing is provided through the use of federal funding and prior bond issues by the state. It is not supported by the state's General Fund budget, which covers the daily operations and services of the Commonwealth.
Springdale's project involves upgrades to its water treatment plant and replacement of approximately two miles of water lines.
'Several components of the water treatment plant are deteriorated and beyond their useful life, which has resulted in excessive manganese in the drinking water on some occasions. In addition, customers with unlined cast iron pipes have complained of dirty water,' said Senator Vulakovich. 'This PENNVEST loan will allow the work to take place later this year while easing the burden that would have been placed on ratepayers. Without this funding user fees would likely have increased by more than 120 percent.'
