Hong Kong Airlines once again claims the title as the most punctual airline in Asia-Pacific, and the third most punctual worldwide, according to OAG’s Punctuality League 2019, which is the most comprehensive annual ranking of on-time performance (OTP) for the world’s airlines and airports.

Qantas leads Australia & New Zealand airlines for OTP with 85.65% of flights on time in 2018. This is only slightly down on the previous year when OTP was 86.18%. Virgin Australia comes in second with OTP of 78.32%, followed by Air New Zealand with 76.70%. Air New Zealand drops out of the Top 10 for the region for the first time, dropping from No.8 last year.

Meanwhile Cairns (CNS) tops the rankings for Australia and New Zealand airports again this year with 83.7% of flights categorised as on-time. Adelaide is second with 82.95% of flights on time, up from 4th place last year.

All 10 airports have seen reductions in OTP compared to last year. Average OTP across the 10 airports last year was 80.9% whilst in 2018, this fell to 78.29%. Auckland (AKL) and Melbourne (MEL) in particular have seen OTP fall by over 4 percentage points.

Key results from OAG’s Punctuality League 2019, include:

  • Dramatic OTP improvements earned Latin American-based Copa Airlines the title of the world’s most punctual airline (OTP 89.79 percent). Regional peer LATAM Airlines Group trailed closely behind in seventh (OTP 85.6 percent).
  • Three Asia-Pacific airlines, Hong Kong Airlines (3rd), Bangkok Airways (5th), Qantas Airways (6th) are in the global Top 10 (and nine in the Top 20) for OTP, spanning mega, mainline and LCCs and reflecting the diversity of choice for air travellers in the region.
  • Japan again leads the way for airports. Tokyo Haneda claims top rank globally for mega airports. Osaka topped the large airports list, with Sapporo and Fukuoka placing in the Top 10.
  • China’s largest three airlines, China Southern (15th, up from 64.19% to 71.52%), China Eastern (17th, up from 61.80% to 70.62%) and Air China (19th, up from 60.14 to 68.84%) delivered significant OTP improvements in 2018.
