An Astoria newspaper recently ran an editorial headlined '40 years of no growth should be an alarm bell.' While the specific reference was to Eastern Oregon, it's true here too. A new report from United Way says 50% of Warrenton families and 45% of Astoria families are struggling to afford basic needs.

The editorial quotes Harney County Judge Steven Grasty as saying, 'We believe the wealth of a nation is based on its natural resources.' He specifically mentioned timber as a natural resource hampered by government policies. Many believe those policies have been influenced by environmentalists' opposition to logging.

The western part of North America is wealthy in many kinds of natural resources, and national energy policies in the US and Canada encourage the export of natural gas to create jobs and boost economies.

The Oregon LNG project will export mostly Canadian natural gas to Asian countries. Without any local impacts from actually producing the gas, more than 3,000 construction jobs and more than 600 long-term permanent private sector jobs would be created in Clatsop County to build, operate, and support the export terminal in Warrenton and the connecting pipeline.

Oregon LNG would pay 90 million dollars in new tax revenues every year for decades, which means additional jobs for teachers, police and fire, road crews, park workers, and more.

The Oregon LNG project provides a long-term boost to what remains of traditional Clatsop County industries, bringing back economic growth. No other business or project on the horizon would provide anywhere near these benefits to the community. Safely, while protecting the environment.
