SPRINGFIELD - Illinois EPA Director Alec Messina today announced the Agency has scheduled eight household hazardous waste collections throughout Illinois for the spring of 2017. Illinois EPA household hazardous waste collections are held to give citizens the opportunity to safely dispose of unused or leftover household products commonly found in homes, basements and garages.

'Illinois EPA appreciates the communities that are eager to offer this service to their residents,' said Director Messina. 'By working with our local partners, we are able to provide a service to residents that ensures hazardous materials are disposed of in a safe and responsible manner.'

The one-day collections are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays for:

  • May 13, 2017 Marion, Aisin Manufacturing, 11000 Redco Dr., Williamson County
  • May 13, 2017 Ottawa, LaSalle County Building, 707 East Etna Rd., LaSalle County
  • May 20, 2017 Jacksonville, Morgan County Fairgrounds, 110 N. Westgate Ave., Morgan County
  • June 3, 2017 Clinton, DeWitt County Building, DeWitt County
  • June 10, 2017 Oak Forest, Oak Forest Public Works, 158th & Lorel Ave., Cook County
  • June 17, 2017 Macomb, Macomb High School, 1525 S. Johnson St., McDonough County
  • June 17, 2017 Swansea, Melvin Price Park, 1500 Caseville Ave., St. Clair County
  • June 24, 2017 Schaumburg, Location TBD, Cook County

Residents are encouraged to bring chemical cleaners, oil-based paints, thinners, antifreeze, motor oil, gasoline, kerosene, weed killers, insecticides and pesticides, old or outdated medicine, and similar hazardous household products. Fluorescent and other high-intensity discharge lamps may also be brought to the collections. Items not accepted include latex paint, explosives, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, agricultural chemicals and business wastes. In addition, the following long-term collection facilities are available for disposal of household hazardous waste:

  • Naperville, 156 Fort Hill Drive (immediately north of Naperville Public Works at 180 Fort Hill Drive), DuPage County
    Hours: Saturdays 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM, Sundays 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM, Phone: 630-420-6095
  • Rockford, Rock River Reclamation District, 3333 Kishwaukee, Winnebago County
    Hours: Saturdays 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM, Sundays Noon - 4:00 PM, Phone: 815-987-5570
  • Chicago, Goose Island, 1150 North Branch, Cook County
    Hours: Tuesdays 7:00 AM - Noon, Thursdays 2:00 AM - 7:00 PM, and First Saturday of every month 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM, Phone: 312-744-7672
  • Lake County, The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) currently operates a long-term household chemical waste collection program. Information and a collection schedule can be found on their website (www.swalco.org) or by calling 847-336-9340.
