IDERA, a leading provider of database lifecycle management solutions (DLM), today announced customer results from its deployment with the University of Notre Dame. Using IDERA SQL Diagnostic Manager, the university can now easily monitor its complex SQL Server infrastructure through more granular alerting and faster troubleshooting of potential issues, ultimately ensuring more consistent quality of service for students.

Notre Dame’s database services department manages more than 40 instances of SQL Server containing more than 575 databases. The team provides support for enterprise-class applications such as Ellucian Banner ERP, CRM systems, document management systems and SharePoint, and smaller department-level applications, such as classroom equipment control, student printing management and e-discovery, among others.

With a wide variety of servers, databases and applications across multiple datacenters, Notre Dame’s team needed to monitor its SQL Server infrastructure in a detailed but cost-effective manner, and to respond proactively to potential problems such as storage space, memory and slow performance.

After evaluating numerous solutions, Notre Dame chose IDERA’s SQL Diagnostic Manager for its easy setup, flexible alerting system and baselines and intuitive dashboard views. Since installing SQL Diagnostic Manager, the team has realized significant productivity gains and cost savings.

“IDERA Diagnostic Manager is so easy to use. The flexible alerting system and dashboard give us the visibility we need to anticipate outages before they occur, and the IDERA support and sales staff are exceptionally easy to work with,” said John W. Grover, MCITP, database administrator at the University of Notre Dame. “Diagnostic Manager has many features available out of the box that provide a wealth of data. We have more information at our fingertips than ever before, which just makes being a DBA more fun.”

Currently, Notre Dame is using IDERA Diagnostic Manager to monitor all of its production SQL Servers and share status updates with management without having to purchase additional tools or add-ons. The team is considering options to customize alerting and reporting at the server or server group level based on different load characteristics.

Along with SQL Diagnostic Manager, IDERA’s SQL Permissions Extractor free tool saves the Notre Dame database team significant time and effort when moving applications from instance to instance by identifying all the security dependencies that are difficult to remember during a migration.

“Top universities like Notre Dame have a responsibility to students, faculty and staff to provide innovative technology services with minimal downtime,” said Robert Anderson, vice president of Product Management at IDERA. “We’re proud of the results they’ve seen so far and look forward to building on that success by helping them deploy additional products to ensure effective management of their entire database lifecycle.”
