Nairobi County Government curbs unsafe food from entering the City
Nairobi, 25th January 2018.

Nairobi City County Executive for Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Forestry, Dr Danvas Makori 19th January 2018 said that the County Government will increase surveillance to ensure that food products entering Nairobi City County from other counties are of high quality and safe for human consumption.

Dr Makori said that Nairobi County shall not allow products full of chemical residues, contaminated dairy products, meat, fish, eggs and poultry to enter the City. ' We are committed to ensuring City residents consume healthy and safe food. Nairobi County is the biggest consumer market of all the food produced by the other counties and the neighbouring countries,' said Dr Makori.

He promised to liaise with his counterparts from counties that supply their products to the city to ensure they are safe and fit for human consumption. 'We are going to restrict unsafe food from
getting into Nairobi by setting standards on food safety equal to the EU standards. It is ironical that we export foods of high quality yet our citizens feed on substandard products' added Dr Makori.

Dr Makori said that the Agriculture Sector has also developed several strategies targeting youth and women groups to assist them to generate income and create employment through Urban Agriculture and Agri- business ventures for food security.
'Urban Agriculture provides a unique opportunity to the youth in urban areas to earn a decent livelihood by engaging in meaningful income-generating activities' said Dr Makori.
Makori made the remarks while receiving a situational analysis brief on food and agriculture from the County Acting Chief Officer for Agriculture Dr Muhari Muriithi.
