​​​Embassy in Dar es Salaam participated in Walk for Elephants on Saturday morning (14/01/2017). The event is organized by the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Tanzania in cooperation with Tanzania China Friendship Promotion Association, aimed to raise public awareness to protect and maintain the sustainability of elephants.

The 5 km walk was led by Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania, Lu Youqing and former president Benjamin Mkapa, and attended by around 500 participants from various backgrounds such as diplomats, senior politicians, activists, media as well as 200 Chinese citizens living in Tanzania. The activity was then followed by a panel discussion about the involvement of Africa - China for wildlife conservation in Africa.

Walk for Elephant is one of the commitments of the Chinese government to stop the trade and processing of ivory at the end of 2017. In addition, this event is an effort to change the negative image of China, in which its citizens has several times engaged in the smuggling of elephants' ivories in Tanzania. Moreover, China is also known as the largest ivory trading market in Asia.​
