According to the statistics of Investment Commission of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, 3,414 foreign direct investment (FDI) projects with a total amount of US$11,037,061,000 were approved in 2016(from January to December). This indicates a decrease of 9.9% in the number of cases, but an increase of 130.09% in FDI amount compared with the same period of 2015.

With regard to inward investment from Mainland China, 158 cases were approved with an amount of US$247,628,000 in 2016. This indicates increase in the FDI amount 1.46% compared with the same period of 2015. Aggregated from July 2009 to December 2016, 947 cases were approved with a total investment amount added up to US$1,690,844,000.

In terms of Taiwan's outbound investment (except Mainland China), 496 projects were registered in 2016 with a total amount of US$12,123,094,000 indicating a increase of 7.36% in the number of cases,and a increase of 12.82% in the amount as compared with the same period of 2015.

As for Taiwan's outward investment to Mainland China, 252 applications have been approved in 2016, indicating a decrease of 21.49% compared with the same period of 2015. The approved investment amount is US$9,183,992,000,11.67% less than the same period in 2015.
