Auction of Coal Blocks

The Government is contemplating a methodology for auction of coal blocks for power sector which is transparent, encourages greater competition and efficiency and optimisies power tariffis. This was stated by Sh. Piyush Goyal, (Minister of state (IC) for Power, Coal & New and Renewable Energy in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha today.

The Minister further stated that based on the recommendations of the Technical Committee constituted for advising the Government and to formulate criteria and classify coal mines/coal blocks for auction and allotment, a list of 65 coal blocks earmarked for auction with their specified end-use has been issued on 18-12-2014.

The Minister further stated that as per the Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Rules, 2014, capacity of the specified end-use project shall be in proportion to the capacity of the Schedule -II coal mine or Schedule -III coal mine, as the case may be, for which a company is bidding, the Minister added.
