“From the expansion of our HealthE series of human health-centric LEDs to new, durable and sustainable LED solutions like the L-Bar, 2016 was a year of marquee product launches,” says Lighting Science CEO Ed Bednarcik. "The Sapphire Awards celebrate innovation among our industry peers, so the recognition is that much more exciting as we look towards 2017.”

The Sapphire Awards recognizes true technology innovators and is the first in the lighting industry to focus on the LED-based solid-state lighting (SSL) market from an enabling-technology and elegance-of-design perspective. Winners in each category will be announced on March 1, 2017.

“It’s an honor to be nominated for this award and to be in the company of such distinguished industry thought-leaders,” says Maxik of his Illumineer of the Year nomination. “Having dedicated so much of my work to the advancement of the LED industry since its inception, it’s immensely satisfying to see how far we have come—and how many possibilities lay ahead of us as we continue to innovate and educate the world on the power of light.”

The Durabulb

The Durabulb is an innovative, versatile LED lamp that resists breaking or shattering due to impact, vibration or external stresses. The genius of the Durabulb lies not only in its contemporary, resilient design, but also in its energy-efficiency and limited impact upon the environment. Due to it’s rugged, polycarbonate exoskeleton, the Durabulb can be used in places a standard light bulb cannot. It’s perfect for a variety of commercial and residential applications such as factories, job sites, commercial real estate, homes, garages and basements. Engineered with a sustainable design focus which maximizes lumens per gram, the Durabulb uses about 30% less materials and 80% less energy than comparable incandescent products on the market. The Durabulb can be shipped and stocked in environmentally-friendly, recyclable plastic tubs of 10 or 20 bulbs, or a more traditional 2-pack option.

The Durabulb was also awarded Top Home Product of the Year by Popular Science magazine in late 2016.

The L-Bar

The high-performance L-Bar is a T8 LED luminaire delivering up to 4,500 lumens/150 lumens per Watt, so effective that just one L-Bar luminaire can replace a standard 25 pound 2’x4’ fluorescent troffer, making it the ideal solution for new commercial construction or legacy fluorescent lighting replacements. The lightweight, splash-resistant L-Bar costs 50 percent less than both traditional LED and fluorescent solutions and is constructed using 95 percent less material. It can be suspended or mounted directly to the ceiling.

The Genesis DynaSpectrum

The patented Genesis DynaSpectrum (Genesis), part of Lighting Science’s HealthE series, is the world’s first commercially-available luminaire to deliver biologically-optimized light for every time of the day – on demand. The Genesis emits a spectrum of light that mimics both daylight (GoodDay®) and twilight (GoodNight) to help naturally regulate the body’s circadian rhythm. Lighting Science’s proprietary DynaSpectrum technology was originally developed in collaboration with NASA for use on the International Space Station, where astronauts experience 16 sunrises and sunsets every 24 hours and have issues adjusting their circadian rhythms to the extreme rigors of life in space. Additionally, Genesis' on-board VOC sensors monitor local air quality and will alert you if it finds a problem. The lamp is controlled through an easy-to-use Smartphone app which can assist in color/spectrum setting, and can be switched to auto-mode to sync day or night spectrums to your local time anywhere in the world. This makes Genesis ideal for the bedside table, office desk or for the international traveler or athlete seeking to prevent jet lag through time-shifted circadian dysfunction.

The Genesis DynaSpectrum was also awarded Top Home Product of the Year by Popular Science magazine in late 2016.
