The North American Metal Packaging Alliance, Inc. (NAMPA) welcomes today's conclusions from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) that there is an estimated safe level of exposure to Bisphenol A (BPA), that consumer exposures are well below the estimated safe exposure level, and that BPA does not present a risk to people of any age or stage of development.

EFSA stressed that the combined oral and non-oral exposure to BPA in humans is three to five times lower than the Authority's revised estimated safe level of exposure to BPA.

"As one of the world's leading authorities on food safety, the EFSA draft opinion should offer reassurance to consumers that even with a lowered safety level, the use of BPA in metal packaging does not pose a risk to people of any age," said Dr. John M. Rost, NAMPA Chairman.

EFSA issued its draft assessment following a thorough review of over 450 studies related to the potential impact of BPA, and will seek public consultation on its opinion over the next several months. The EFSA conclusion is consistent with those of other regulatory bodies around the world, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), who have found the low levels of BPA exposure by consumers pose no threat to human health.
