J Murphy & Sons : Network Rail announce Murphy will complete major Tunnel Maintenance Scheme

Network Rail has brought Murphy on board to provide sprayed concrete lining to the ram arch in six sections within the tunnel, improve drainage and carry out various safety works and checks, all during a 23 day blockade in March 2019. The maintenance work will make sure the tunnel is fit for purpose for at least the next 100 years.

Continuing to successfully carry out tunnel maintenance projects across the UK is hugely important to our ten-year plan. With our self-delivery model across power, water and rail, we are well placed to provide world-class infrastructure for Network Rail passengers in Somerset.'

Work will begin in June 2018 with extensive survey works being carried out within the tunnel to establish the exact data for detailed design to commence.

Whiteball Tunnel

Murphy has an established legacy of delivering high quality tunnel maintenance and drainage works across the UK and has worked successfully with Network Rail in the past on similar projects. Elements of the Whiteball Tunnel project are reminiscent of the Farnworth Tunnel work Murphy completed in 2016 and were highly commended for.

Paul Mohan, Murphy's transport director, said: 'We are putting commuters and residents at the heart of this work we do here and will do everything we can to minimise disruption. I'm very pleased with the plans we've made and am looking forward to putting these in to action.'

Murphy's main project office will be at Swindon and the work is due for completion in April 2019.
