Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/tcfh5d/global_pedelec) has announced the addition of the "Global Pedelec Market 2015-2019" report to their offering.

The report predicts the market will grow at a CAGR of over 5% during the forecast period. It expects the demand and sales of pedelecs to increase considerably until 2019.

Traditionally, pedelecs were manufactured using steel, but owing to the weight added by the steel in the pedelec, manufacturers have shifted their focus to aluminum-based frames. Even beyond that, pedelec manufacturers are exploring the use of carbon fiber to make bike frames. Aluminum wheel rims are gradually being replace with carbon fiber. Carbon fibers offer manufacturers more design flexibility and improved strength. Carbon fibers can make a pedelec 3-4 times lighter and stronger compared to alloy bikes.

According to the report, the cost of pedelecs in comparison to other non-electric bikes is high, owing to Li-ion batteries that are used to power the motor. The battery cost depends on the material cost and production volume. However, the cost of Li-ion batteries has been declining since 2010, owing to increased volume of production, compared to demand. It is expected that with the increase in production capacity, there would be oversupply of Li-ion batteries in the coming years.

Further, the report states that although pedelecs are environment friendly and offer low-cost transportation, their growth has been affected by their high initial costs.
