Registration is now open for five grain operations courses from the Grain Elevator and Processing Society (GEAPS) and Kansas State University (K-State) Distance Education Program in February, including one course in Spanish. These online courses run from Feb. 8 - March 11, and registration closes Tuesday, Feb. 2. Courses are open to anyone, even if they are not a GEAPS member or a student enrolled at K-State. GEAPS 500: Introduction to Grain Handling Operationsoffers an introduction to the key purposes, equipment and processes of grain handling facilities with an emphasis on safety. This course allows new employees to gain valuable insight into the industry. It also helps seasoned employees enhance their skills. GEAPS 500 is also available inSpanish,and covers the same content as the English version.

GEAPS 521: Aeration System Design and Fan Operational Managementwill help participants understand the purpose of grain aeration, system components and how to calculate and develop strategies for aeration system design and fan operational management. This course teaches the basic principles of designing and operating grain aeration systems to maintain grain quality during storage.

InGEAPS 530: Quality Management Systems for Bulk Materials Handling Operations, participants learn about quality management systems and how they are used in agricultural storage environments. This course provides strategies for integrating systems into normal business activities and teaches the skills needed to create food safety plans and develop quality management systems. After completing the course, participants should be able to conduct a basic quality analysis of facility operations and identify points where physical quality or economics are impacted.

Experienced employees who deal with conveyance equipment can also benefit fromGEAPS 555: Advanced and Preventative Maintenance for Grain Facilities: Conveyance Equipment.This advanced-level course covers developing and implementing preventative maintenance programs; repair and upkeep of bucket elevators and conveyers; conveyance equipment lubrication and effective hazard monitoring.
