On January 23-24 a conference organised by the Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) and the Council of European Energy Regulators (CEER), on 'Towards a future-proofed EU Energy Market Design', is taking place in Brussels. Participants representing the European Commission and Parliament, energy regulators, and consumer organisations are due to discuss the Commission's Energy Market Design proposals, which were published on 30 November 2016 as part of the Clean Energy for All Europeans package. They will be presented at the conference by Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič and Commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete.

The Energy Market Design proposals put consumers at the centre of the clean energy transition, whilst making use of the power of the internal European energy market as much as possible. They encourage and reward flexibility, for example by giving consumers the right to generate and then consume, store or sell electricity on the market. They also seek to promote greater regional cooperation between regulators and transmission system operators. In addition, while the proposals aim to further strengthen the resilience of Europe's energy system, the Commission has also proposed a new Regulation on Risk Preparedness that would ensure EU countries work together to prevent and manage electricity crisis situations.
