Shares of energy companies fell slightly amid trepidation about the outlook for economic growth.

ExxonMobil was one of dozens of major stocks halted at the opening bell on the New York Stock Exchange after a glitch caused chaos in the opening auction. Shares of the oil giant gyrated between just below $100 and $126 during the wild opening sequence before closing around $113.

Natural gas futures slipped to near 19-month lows as a muted economic outlook weighed on demand expectations.
