Shares of energy companies were flat as a spike in oil futures paused in light of the growing likelihood of more economic restrictions in India.
Oil futures ticked down to just under $65 a barrel in New York, as India reported more than 400,000 new Covid-19 cases for the second straight day, putting further pressure on a health-care system under catastrophic stress.
Natural-gas futures also gave back some of their recent gains despite a lower-than-forecast buildup in stockpiles.
