Press Release - S. Hickory St Bridge

Posted 1/10/2018 | Engineering & Traffic Division

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) has reduced the load limit on the South Hickory Street Bridge between Western Avenue and S. Military Road to 30-Tons. The load limit will not affect standard means of transportation; however will affect heavily loaded semi traffic. The bridge remains safe, but should be used within the new posted load limits. All required signs are posted, north and south of the bridge, indicating the new load limit.

The City of Fond du Lac currently has over 34 bridges which are required by state law to be inspected. The S. Hickory Street Bridge was inspected in 2017 and it was discovered at that time there were deteriorations in the bridge, prompting the WisDOT to post the load limit. The City will be working with engineers to continue to evaluate the structure of the bridge and will further notify the public of any changes to the posted load limit.

The Engineering and Traffic Division is requiring all heavy semi traffic above 30-Tons to use an alternate route to preserve the integrity of the bridge.
