Alopecia areata (AA) is a relatively common cause of hair loss in children. However, it is unclear whether the condition is associated with other autoimmune conditions, including thyroid disorders. As a result, screening practices vary widely.
Recently, Andrew Bauer, MD, endocrinologist and Director of the Pediatric Thyroid Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), along with Leslie Castelo-Soccio, MD, dermatologist and Research Director of the Dermatology Section at CHOP, co-authored a new paper that addressed this question. They discussed their study and key findings with Medscape.
