Athens, Greece - 30 January 2020 - MYTILINEOS, acknowledging its corporate responsibility for maintaining the balance in nature, and in collaboration with the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature, is implementing the environmental initiative 'Information and awareness-raising of the school community on forest fire prevention and response, forest protection policies and practices', which is part of the activities of the International Thematic Network for Environmental Education 'Learning about Forests'.

This action is taking place during the 2019-2020 school year and foresees the participation of an estimated 1,000 students and 50 educators from 50 primary and secondary schools from all over Greece.

The initiative comprises the following activities: (a) oak tree-planting and seeding activities in areas affected by fires, (b) provision by highly qualified scientists of detailed information on fire prevention (with a possible small-scale pilot research activity involving the identification of fire hazards in a settlement), and (c) creation and production of '10 Do's and Dont's of correct tree planting' poster, together with an informative leaflet with instructions and details on correct planting, for distribution to all participating schools.

The completion of the initiative will be followed by the organisation of an original competition on the creation of a 'Forest Eco-Code', which will include instructions on forest protection and good behaviour in the forest. Winner students will be awarded at a special event to take place in the auditorium of the MYTILINEOS headquarters in Maroussi, receiving as a prize a backpack with useful materials for organising educational activities, together with educational material on fires and their causes and proper prevention.

The action is coordinated by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature in collaboration with the competent Forest Service and the Institute of Mediterranean Forest Ecosystems and Forest Products Technology.

This new collaboration of MYTILINEOS with the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature is implemented in the context of the strategic partnerships which the company develops with major social actors for the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) 11 & 15.

The expected outcomes of the initiative focus on: (a) achieving a fuller understanding of the importance and value of forests, (b) providing the best possible information on the prevention of forest fires, and (c) raising awareness of the problems that are caused at national and global level by the depletion of forest areas and have a significant impact on society at large, thereby enhancing the environmental awareness of school students and educators.

It is worth noting that in addition to enhancing the operational capacity of the Fire Service with six (6) vehicles, MYTILINEOS assists fire brigades in their work by also contributing human resources when needed. More specifically, the company's Metallurgy Sector - Aluminium of Greece - maintains close cooperation with the Fire Service and, with its special fire-fighting team, has the capability to directly intervene with vehicles and specially trained personnel, in response to fire-fighting emergencies.

During this year's fire season, the company's special fire-fighting team made a crucial contribution to the efforts to contain a fire at its point of origin in the area of Antikyra, after which - and until the fire was completely put out - it operated under the supervision of the Livadeia Fire Service.

This special team of Aluminium of Greece has also undergone special training in rescue operations (freeing trapped people, evacuating flood waters etc.) and intervenes when needs arise, always in close cooperation with the competent authorities.
