OTTAWA--Canada's trade deficit in merchandise goods narrowed in November, due in part to a surge in sales of refined gold to the U.K.

Imports fell in November from the previous month, on a decline in purchases by businesses of machinery and equipment.

Statistics Canada said Thursday that Canada's deficit in the global trade of merchandise goods in November came in at 3.34 billion Canadian dollars, or the equivalent of $2.63 billion. Market expectations were for a C$3.5 billion deficit, according to economists at Desjardins Securities.

The previous month's trade deficit was slightly revised to C$3.73 billion versus the earlier estimate of C$3.76 billion.
