OTTAWA--Retail sales in Canada fell modestly in November, led by a decline in sales at food and beverage stores and at dealers of building materials and garden equipment and supplies.

Sales fell 0.1% in November from the previous month, to a seasonally adjusted 61.79 billion Canadian dollars, the equivalent of about US$45.88 billion, Statistics Canada said Friday. The fall was less than Statistics Canada's preliminary estimate last month for a 0.5% drop in sales, following a revised rise of 1.3% for the month of October.

Statistics Canada said early indications from companies suggest that retail sales increased in December to 0.5%, an estimate that will be revised.
