CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - Jan 15, 2014) - The Calgary Folk Music Festival and Ship & Anchor Pub are proud to announce that submissions are open for the 11th annual songwriting competition. Albertan artists are encouraged to submit their songs for a chance to perform live at the finals, held May 17 - 19th at the Ship & Anchor.

Open to artists of all ages and genres, the contest features six unique categories and doles out more than $25,000 in prizes. Artists can enter their songs online through the Calgary Folk Festival website, or by picking up a submission form at the Ship & Anchor Pub. Deadline to enter is March 1st, 2014.

The winners of each category will have the opportunity to perform their song live at the Calgary Folk Music Festival in July.

Contest dates at the Ship & Anchor are as follows:

Beaver Tales & Untapped Newcomer: May 17th, 2014. 2:00pm
Youth & Upstart: May 18th, 2014. Noon
35/35 Hindsight & Pros & Prose: May 19th, 2014. Noon

To commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Calgary Folk Music Festival, a new category- 35/35 Hindsight - has been included, encouraging artists to submit a song that captures a folk festival memory, be it an inspirational performance, a unique experience, or a depiction of what the festival means to them.

Moving into its second decade, the Songwriter Contest has established itself as a launching pad for music careers, with artists such as Braids, Michael Bernard Fitzgerald and T. Buckley attributing much of their early success to the opportunities afforded through the contest.
