• Inflation rate 2.9 percent in December
  • Food prices push up inflation
  • Average inflation 2.5 percent in 2012

Figures released today by Statistics Netherlands show that Dutch inflation rose slightly in December, to 2.9 percent. This is 0.1 of a percent point higher than in November.

Food prices were the main cause of the higher rate of inflation in December. Foodstuffs cost 3.7 percent more than twelve months previously. This is the largest increase since March 2009. Petrol prices had a reducing effect on inflation.

The average rate of inflation in the Netherlands in 2012 was 2.5 percent. This is higher than the average 2.3 percent in 2011. The main reason for this higher average was the substantially larger increase in rent levels in 2012.

Dutch inflation according to the harmonised consumer price index (HICP) was 3.4 percent in December, 0.2 of a percent point higher than in November. Eurozone inflation remained at the same level: 2.2 percent.
