On Monday 6 February Blacktown City Council is staging a community forum in Minchinbury to discuss the proposal to build one of the world's largest incinerators at Eastern Creek.

The State Government is currently considering the Energy from Waste proposal by The Next Generation NSW Pty Ltd (TNG), which will use the heat from burning waste to generate electricity.

'TNG has accepted our invitation to hold a community forum, and representatives will be there to answer questions' the Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Stephen Bali said.

'It is an opportunity for members of the public to ask questions and to voice any concerns they may have,' he said.

'This project is essentially a large incinerator that burns waste products to generate electricity.

'If approved, it will be the largest of its type in the world, dwarfing similar facilities already operating in Europe, where the environmental laws are tougher than those in NSW.

'Blacktown Council is concerned NSW's environmental laws are not as rigorous, and that this plant will not operate at the same high standards as those in Europe, leaving local residents with less protection from pollution.

TNG representatives will be at the forum to explain their project, Mayor Bali said.

'This is your opportunity to voice your opinion and ask questions about this major and significant proposal.'

Full details of the proposal and the opportunity to lodge a submission about the plant can be found on the Department of Planning and Environment website; by clicking the 'major project assessments' and then the 'projects on exhibition' tabs; or, you can follow this link: http://www.majorprojects.planning.nsw.gov.au/index.pl?action=view_job&job_id=6236
