Residents and businesses are once again being encouraged to join forces to get a better deal on their gas and electricity through the collective energy switching scheme 'Ready to Switch?'

The Autumn Ready to Switch campaign closed last month and locals are estimated to have saved £11,000 (around £218 per household) on their annual energy costs.

The next round of the scheme is now open with residents able to register until Monday 13 February 2017.

Following this, an auction will take place on Tuesday 14 February where energy suppliers are invited to bid against each other to offer the best deal to residents.

The most competitive deal will be selected and registered households will receive a personalised energy offer enabling them to switch to the new tariff from the winning energy provider.

The scheme works by combining the buying power of residents buying power to negotiate cheaper prices directly with energy companies. People then save money as a big group all at the same time.

Anyone can join the scheme including homeowners, tenants and residents on prepayment or card meters - as long as any current energy debts are less than £500.

Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said: 'Ready to Switch has worked brilliantly for those who have signed up to save a substantial amount of money but there are tens of thousands of people who are still paying far more than they need to.

'Up to 91% of Blackpool households who registered with the scheme earlier this year could have saved money if they had switched to one of the market leading deals offered.

'The more people sign up, the bigger the potential savings are, so I would urge people to give it a go now and let their friends and family know.

'A scheme for small and medium sized businesses is also available which offers a free energy broker service.'

Ready to Switch offers a free registration process and households are under no obligation to take up their energy offer.

The scheme was launched in 2012 and is lead by Peterborough Council and run by switching specialists, iChoosr.
