State Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal will join students, parents, teachers and community leaders at a National School Choice Week whistle-stop rally in Tucson on Wednesday, January 29, organizers announced today.

The rally is one of 14 events along the National School Choice Week whistle-stop train and motor coach tour. The event will be held at 10:00 a.m. at the Old Tucson Studios, and is free to attend. (RSVP at www.schoolchoicetrain.com)

Additional speakers include Jaime Molera, former Arizona State Superintendent of Public Instruction and Member of the Arizona State Board of Education; Lisa Graham Keegan, former Arizona State Superintendent of Public Instruction and Senior Adviser to National School Choice Week; and Courtney Cox, a student from Canyon Rose Academy. The event will also include a performance from a student from San Miguel High School.

The goal of the event is to demonstrate support for school choice and educational opportunity Arizona and across the country. National School Choice Week -- which will feature more than 5,500 independently-planned events across the country -- will be the nation's largest-ever celebration of educational opportunity. The Week shines a positive spotlight on effective education options for children, including traditional public schools, public charter schools, magnet schools, private schools, online learning and homeschooling.

"During National School Choice Week, parents, students, and communities celebrate the excellent educational options in our country," said Lisa Graham Keegan, Senior Advisor to National School Choice Week. "It's a time to celebrate equal access to a quality education and the basic freedom for families to choose the school that is best for them. Here in Arizona, and across the country, we are seeing groundswell of momentum for school choice."

The event is hosted by National School Choice Week in partnership with Arizona Alternative Education Consortium, Arizona Charter Schools Association, Democrats for Education Reform, Education Reform Now, GreatSchools.org, Institute for Better Education, Pima Joint Technical Education District, Presidio School, Rose Academies, San Miguel High School / Cristo Rey Network, Sonoran Schools, and Step Up Schools.
