Video released by the British Republican pressure group, Republic, showed demonstrators waving placards, booing and shouting: "Down with the crown" as King Charles and Queen Camilla drove past in their carriage during the procession that took place before the official state opening. The location and the date were confirmed by original file metadata.

According to Republic, around 200 demonstrators took part "to protest against the monarchy, King Charles and his role in the ceremony."

Managing Director for Republic, Graham Smith said: "The State Opening of Parliament should be a celebration of our democracy. Instead it is a showcase of the worst, least democratic aspects of our political system."

Britain's King Charles set out Prime Minister Keir Starmer's legislative agenda on Wednesday, promising a government of service focused on reviving the economy and tackling issues from an acute housing shortage to a cost of living crisis.
